In the 1970s Cartier launched a line called Les Must de Cartier that offered Cartier design at a more attainable price. In 1977 came the Tank in vermeil, which is still the best known watch of the line. Round and oval shapes such as the Vendôme and Colisée followed later. The watches come from Cartier itself and carry the typical hallmarks of the house: Roman numerals, a chemin de fer minute track and a crown with a blue cabochon.

The models of the Must line

The Tank Must is the classic, rectangular, in SM and LM. The Vendôme has a round case with distinctive lugs. The Colisée is the rarer, more individual shape. In addition there are occasional Must Ronde, Trinity and Chambord watches, which we can only offer now and then.

Vermeil: gold on sterling silver

All watches of the Must line have a case made of 925 sterling silver with a layer of gold. This is called vermeil. We have every watch re-plated with 10 microns of 18K yellow gold so that it looks the way it did on day one. What is behind it is explained in our guide Cartier Vermeil explained.

Quartz or manual winding

Most Must watches run on a quartz movement, a few Tank Must have a mechanical manual winding movement. Both versions are sold serviced by us.
